CLA President Harry Cotterell said: "We are very pleased that in New opportunities for sustainable development and growth through the reuse of existing buildings the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) suggests that the change of use of redundant farm buildings should be allowed under permitted development rights.
"This means that landowners can use their old buildings for new purposes without having to go through the tiresome and expensive full planning application process. We lobbied Defra vigorously on this point and are delighted they have worked with Defra and DCLG on bringing about this breakthrough."
The CLA has responded positively to the suggestion in the consultation which closed today.
However, the Association is "disappointed" with another planning consultation paper, Streamlining information requirements for planning applications.
Mr Cotterell said: "Unfortunately, the proposals made in the Streamlining information paper will do very little to reduce information requirements demanded by many planning authorities before they register a planning application. For instance, a member was asked to provide a flood risk assessment for a barn which was not in a flood risk area, and someone was requested to provide an external landscaping design for a planning application which was purely internal work
