The High Speed Rail (West Midlands - Crewe) Bill will be presented to the House of Commons today (17 July) by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling. The route through Yorkshire is also set to be confirmed.
CLA Chief Surveyor Andrew Shirley said: “Our sympathies lie with the thousands of people who find out today that their homes and livelihoods will be under the shadow of HS2 for a number of years to come. The CLA will continue to ensure their voices are heard and that the impact of the scheme is understood by both HS2 Ltd and the Government.
“Throughout the whole HS2 process we have stood up for land and property owners over the unfairness of the compulsory purchase system. Benefits we secured during negotiations on the Phase One London to West Midlands line and the subsequent changes in legislation must be extended to those affected by Phase Two. These were breakthroughs which should be applied to any other home and business owners affected by the thousands of infrastructure schemes taking place now or in the future.
“We will hold HS2 Ltd to account if previous poor practice continues. The company must step up its commitment to better communicate with farmers and landowners along the new route and ensure it does what it can to reduce the impact of delivering Phase Two.”
