MP meeting for CLA East

The CLA has met with farmers and landowners during a meeting in Suffolk to discuss the Government’s proposed changes to agricultural property relief and business property relief.

The meeting, attended by around 40 guests and facilitated by James Cartlidge MP, provided an opportunity for the CLA, NFU and the Rural Payments Agency to answer questions from the audience about how the changes will impact their businesses.

CLA Communications Manager Lee Murphy highlighted the importance of keeping the issue in the public eye to ensure politicians sit up and take notice of the devastating impact the changes will have on family businesses. He also raised how damaging the proposals would be for the growth of the wider UK economy.

Speaking after the session, he said: “This meeting provided an opportunity to update those who live and work in rural communities on how the CLA is on their side in speaking up against the government’s plans for inheritance tax.

“We are engaging with politicians locally and in parliament to ensure the rural voice is heard loud and clear. We will continue to keep the pressure on and argue against the plans as we know just how destructive they will be for the sector.”
