There are significant opportunities surrounding natural capital markets. To help members understand the options available, the CLA is hosting a Natural Capital Roadshow over the winter months.

These events in England and Wales are a chance to hear from experts about the range of current and future income sources for sustainable farming, carbon, nature and water. With potential funding of more than £3.5bn per year from governments and the private sector across England and Wales, perhaps more depending on how markets evolve, there are many compelling opportunities.

The CLA will look at what this means for individual businesses and help demystify the market. These events will help to answer:

● What funding is available through government schemes?

● What are the main private sector market opportunities?

● Do the economics stack up?

● What are the risks and realities of long-term agreements to nature markets?

● What are the legal and tax considerations?

● Where do you start if you are interested?

Members will also be able to learn from real life examples and apply this inspiration to their rural business. The events run from November 2023 through to early 2024, with the first taking place in the south west and south east.

CLA work

The CLA has been heavily involved in developing government policy and private sector environmental markets in recent years. This is an evolving marketplace, with many people cautious about long-term commitments but interested in what opportunities it might provide.

As well as influencing policy, the CLA provides advice to members through guidance notes, blogs and by email and phone. Visit our Natural Capital hub below for updated guidance notes on government schemes and nature markets. The CLA Natural Capital Directory, exclusive to members, is also a one-stop shop for advice and services related to nature markets.

The CLA has produced full descriptions of what natural capital entails, along with case studies and guidance notes.
