Join us for Beaulieu Estate tour, boat ride and drinks reception at Hampshire Branch social event and AGM
CLA delighted to be hosting county's AGM at Beaulieu - book now to avoid disappointmentThe CLA is delighted to be holding its Hampshire Branch summer event and AGM 2022 at the Beaulieu Estate, which has been in the ownership of the Montagu family for over four centuries.
You are invited to join us on Wednesday 28 September for a tour of the estate, drinks reception and two-course lunch, kindly supported by Thrings and Saffery Champness.
In an idyllic New Forest setting over-looking the picturesque mill pond, Palace House was once the gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. When Thomas Wriothesley, a direct descendent of the current owner Lord Montagu, bought the estate in 1538, he converted the gatehouse into a modest manor house. A significant remodelling and extension process in the 1800s transformed it into the country house it is today.
Next to the House is the 800-year-old Abbey founded by King John, before being destroyed on the orders of Henry VIII in 1538. Owing to the efforts of the Montagu family ancestors, it is a conserved ruin where generations of visitors have enjoyed its peaceful setting.
A few minutes down the road is the Beaulieu River, one of the few privately owned rivers in the world. Today it is a tranquil spot, well-loved by yachtsmen and nature enthusiasts.
We will hold our AGM before enjoying a private guided tour of the House, followed by a drinks reception and a chance to take in the Monastic Life Exhibition, and lunch in the Domus, for the exclusive use of CLA members. We will conclude with a boat ride down the river and a talk from The Hon Mary Montagu-Scott.
