The new Chairman of the Kent branch of the CLA, William Boscawen, says it is an ‘uncertain’ time for farming – but he will try his best to support the industry.

Mr Boscawen replaced Charles Tassell at a recent committee meeting, in one of the most important rural roles in the county.

Mr Boscawen and his wife moved to his family farm in Kent in 2015 having met in Hong Kong where they were both working in finance. With a passion for winemaking and English sparkling wine in particular, he founded Mereworth Wines near Maidstone, planted his vineyards within a year of his return, and then built a winery at Brewers Hall Oast.

The father-of-three grew up on a dairy farm in Cornwall, and has been President of the Kent County Agricultural Society for the last five years. In Kent the family owns and manages several farms, a residential and commercial property portfolio, woodlands and more recently a restaurant.

Mr Boscawen said: “It is a pleasure to be stepping into the chair’s role for the Kent branch of the CLA at such an important time for the farming and rural sectors.

“With the interests of farming in mind, the word uncertainty is everything we don't want. There will be a great deal of concern among farmers and importantly wider communities. The best policies take time to form, and I’m looking forward to helping the CLA channelling our thoughts to the right corridors to make a positive difference.”

'Delighted to welcome William'

As Kent branch Chairman, Mr Boscawen will be representing hundreds of farmers, landowners and rural businesses across the county.

CLA South East Regional Director Tim Bamford said: “We wish to place on record our sincere thanks to Charles for his tremendous work, ideas and enthusiasm over the course of his chairmanship.

“We are delighted to welcome William into the role and look forward to working closely with him over the next few years.”

Outgoing Chairman Mr Tassell said: “I’ve enjoyed my time as branch chair. Attending the quarterly council meetings, in London or online, was an opportunity to learn more about the work of the CLA and meet chairs and staff from across the country.

“Each year attending the Emsden trophy farm walk remains the highlight for me.”
